Willamette University School of Education is a master’s degree granting program at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, United States. The school offers a master of arts in teaching degree and runs the Center for Excellence in Teaching program, or CET.[1] These programs have a total enrollment of 250 students. The school is currently a candidate for national accreditation through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE is a national coalition of more than 30 organizations that represents teachers, teacher educators, policymakers, and the public.[2]

Center for Excellence in Teaching

The CET program began in 1999 and offers graduate level courses for teaching professionals.[3] These courses are designed to provide class work needed for teachers attempting to earn their Continuing Teaching License, earn a reading endorsement towards Teachers Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) requirements, an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement, and other professional courses for teachers and administrators.[3] Additionally, the school offers the New Directions in Educational Leadership designed for school administrators to obtain licensing.[4]

MAT

Willamette’s Master of Arts in Teaching program has both a full-time and part-time option.[5] Within these programs, there are four focuses of curriculum: early childhood, elementary for grades 3 to 8, middle level for grades 5 to 9, and secondary for grades 7 to 12.[5] The MAT program began in 1992, with the School of Education forming in 1996.[6]

The full-time program lasts ten months and includes a year long placement in a public school.[5] The part-time program is a two-year option named Aspire. This also includes placement in a public school, but is more flexible to time constraints as it is designed for working adults started in 2004.[7]

Four MAT alums have received the Milken Family Foundation’s Milken Educator Award since 2000.[8][9][10][11][12] The $25,000 award is given to educators who make efforts to furthering excellence in education.[13]

Other programs

Willamette’s School of Education also offers the Oregon Writing Project that teaches graduate students, teachers, and pre-college students.[14] This includes offering a Young Writers Camp during the summer for students in grades 3 to 7.[15] Another program is an annual Fine Arts Festival sponsored by the school that introduces elementary students to a variety of arts including music composition, ballet, jazz, sculpture, and opera.[16]
